John William Waterhouse (1849 - 1917) was an English painter and draftsman known for working in the Pre-Raphaelite style. Using vivid colour schemes, natural settings and beautiful light in his paintings, John Waterhouse created several high quality paintings during his life time, and most of them were created using oils.
Gaining encouragement from his father, a painter too, he drew inspiration from the rural Staffordshire village where he grew up - and was also inspired by natural beauty and beautiful female figures. His art prints were in the spirit of two major artists of that century; Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton. With 'The Lady of Shallot' - Waterhouse created perhaps his best-known work, perfectly capturing the romantic, poetic themes which influenced his art.
