Contemporary artist Jaykoe explores the impact of accelerated capitalism and globalisation on urban space. Building up from drawings, Jaykoe seamlessly crosses disciplines in his innovative use of photography, sculpture, installation, neon, painting, printmaking, video and bookmaking, to create artworks that are heavily layered, like the cities they represent.
‘Formations IV’ depicts Guyas, the site of a 2013 regeneration project in Ecuador. In 1953, one-time visitor Ernesto Che Guevara passed through on his motorbike; today, the revolutionary wouldn’t recognise the former shanty town rising up the hillside, now endowed with a new lease of life, as businesses, bars, and tavernas have opened up inside the bright wooden structures. A beautiful example of urban transformation, brilliantly captured in Jaykoe’s high-impact print.

Conceptually provocative, his work sits at the intersection between urbanisation, post-colonialism, and inter-culturalism, a combination that allows him to trace urban-spatial movements within densely populated cities, and to translate these patterns into powerful visual forms. Drawing on his background as a DJ, Jaykoe applies the experimental process of sampling to his work, for an innovative approach to twenty-first century urbex art.
