Ford Madox Brown (1821 – 1893) was an English painter of moral and historical subjects, notable for his distinctively graphic style. Although Brown himself was never an official member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood - a group of British artists known for their attention to detail, vibrant colours, and interest in scenes from literature – he was associated with this style, because he became friendly with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and others in the group.
