The act of collating ephemera and securing it to a piece of paper to create an artwork was given prominence by the Cubist movement in the 20th century, but collaging materials dates back to the 10th Century. From the gluing of materials like paper and cloth by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, to the Surrealists’ abstract depictions of reality, and the merging of high and low forms of art by Pop artists, collage has historically taken many forms. It is a relatable and accessible art form that is still favoured by contemporary artists. Whilst Joe Webb and Maria Rivans use vintage ephemera sourced in markets and second-hand shops, Nadia Attura and Bonnie and Clyde bring the much-loved old craft form into the modern day with their digital collages. Our collage collection demonstrates the creative freedom that the art form allows for and encourages, featuring both the traditional and modernised methods of collage and encompassing a wide range of subject matter, from landscapes to portraits, cityscapes, animals and interiors.
