About The Artist - Gina Soden

At the heart of Gina Soden’s photography is a preoccupation with abandoned structures and locations. Based in London, she travels widely to undisclosed sites throughout Europe and explores the boundaries of beauty, decay, nostalgia and neglect. The genesis of each piece is often the unique architectural character of each location, heightened by their painfully slow transformation after years of abandonment.

Painterly in style, each of Soden’s artworks favours a lyrical composition: one that breathes life into decrepit spaces to show us that art, like living organisms, has something like a life of its own. Deeply transcendental, Soden’s oeuvre exposes a fascination with controversy, be that in gaining unlicensed access to off limits areas, or in the public failure to maintain and conserve striking works of architectural importance.

From derelict asylums to long disused schools, ex-military complexes to abandoned power stations, Soden draws out the haunting character of the empty space, in a way that speaks back to the viewer: our deep-set enchantment with the places that time forgot reveals something of our own humanity, and our need to create lasting and lively impressions.

Soden’s work is held in private collections in various Soho Houses including London, Barcelona, New York and Amsterdam. Her work is also in the collections of The Groucho Club, Goldman Sachs, and the Ned, and two of her works were selected by Sir Peter Blake for the show ‘Things I Love at the Fine Art Society’.
