Adolph Gottlieb was an early pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, advocating for the unique ability of abstraction to convey honest emotion during the turmoil of World War II.

In ÒFlurry,Ó two round irregular forms sit above frantic black marks. Much of the print is sparse, allowing the extant shapes to interact with the space in a primal and emotionally resonant way.

Unlike many other abstractionists, Gottlieb didnÕt claim to work from scenes of nature or lifeÑrather, he was inspired by art history and his personal emotions.
