The surreptitious street artist returns with a new West-Bank accommodation.
In case you hadn’t heard the biggest name in street art Banksy is back with his latest ambitious project, a luxury art hotel located in Palestine.
It's been dubbed by the artist as “the world’s worst hotel” and is officially titled ‘The Walled Off Hotel'. The guest house is situated in the holy town of Bethlehem, just metres away from the controversial wall that divides Palestinian and Israeli territories.
Inside the hotel, guest can choose from 9 rooms ranging from a basic bunk bed “traveller” set up, to an opulent Banksy-themed room featuring an enormous canvas by the artist, depicting a heart ensnared in barbed wire above the room’s king-sized bed.
The Walled Off Hotel isn’t Banksy's first foray into the area, having visited Bethlehem back in 2005 when he stencilled some of his best known and controversial works on the west bank wall. It is Banksy’s first major project since Dismaland, his 2015 bemusement park in Weston-super-Mare.
In a statement, the artist said: ‘It’s exactly one hundred years since Britain took control of Palestine and started re-arranging the furniture – with chaotic results.
‘I don’t know why but it felt like a good time to reflect on what happens when the United Kingdom makes a huge political decision without fully comprehending the consequences.’
'This place is the centre of the universe - every time God comes to earth it seems to happen near here. The architecture and landscape are stunning, the food delicious and the current situation remarkable and touching. This is a place of immense spiritual and political significance - and very good falafel. We guarantee you won't be disappointed.' – A further statement on Banksy/Walled Off Hotel website.
The hotel plays host to dozens of new works by Banksy, including several reinterpretations of existing pieces. All the work centres around the barrier that divides the area, highlighting the ongoing tension between the two separate states.
The Walled Off Hotel opens to visitors from 11th March with musical acts Nine Inch Nails and Massive Attack booked to play in the wine bar, with a specially designed remote performance.
