We’ve just come across this great video interview with artist Justine Smith. It was made by Manchester Art Gallery last year for their exhibition ‘The First Cut’, but the discussion is very relevant to the work she’s producing today.
Justine Smith talks about her acclaimed project ‘The Money Map of the World’, which was a seminal piece for her. The map which took 7 months to create is made from the world’s banks notes. She explains how, “the Money Map of the World isn’t like a political map which shows all of the individual countries”, it shows countries which have declared themselves as separate states but aren’t recognised by the UN.
She also explains how the bank note “is like a little piece of propaganda”, revealing information about each country and how it chooses to represent itself. It’s a fascinating piece and a great interview; definitely worth a watch!
