Spotlight on Whaam by Roy Lichtenstein

'Whaam!' is a wonderful example of Roy Lichtenstein’s powerful comic book inspired Pop Art.

It is one of a series of war paintings and was inspired by 'All American Men of War' published by DC comics in 1962. Lichtenstein was attracted by the way commercial art sources such as comic images or advertisements depicted highly emotional subject matters such as love and war using detached techniques.

Other paintings by Lichtenstein on this theme include ‘As I Opened Fire’ and ‘Blam’.
