Tagging was once the domain of graffiti artists but it is now a major online public art project run by the Public Catalogue Foundation and the BBC. Your Paintings is a website which aims to show the entire UK national collection of oil paintings, the stories behind the paintings, and where to see them.

There are an estimated 212,000 oil paintings in the UK (nearly 100 times the size of the National Gallery’s collection) and at any one time around 80% of the paintings in the national collection are not on public display. These can now all be accessed on the Your Paintings site, which displays works by over 37,000 artists. Whilst the majority are British artists, a good number aren’t, including well-known names such as Claude Monet, Raphael, and Vincent Van Gogh.

To improve the site, the ‘Tagger’ has been created to allow anyone to classify a selection of paintings; by undertaking this process ‘taggers’ are helping other users to be able to search the collection in a more sophisticated manner. So far 8,656 taggers have tagged 13,289 paintings. There are six tagger levels to work through, from Green (0-4 paintings) to Master (over 1000 paintings). It's the perfect procrastination for any art fan!
