Contemporary artist Shuby has recreated her portrait of Carmen Miranda for a local fruit and vegetable shop in St Leonards on Sea. Her pasted Technicolor vision has brought delightful kitsch art to the East Sussex streets in a true celebration of the beauty of fruit.
The work is a collage using photos of Portuguese-born Brazilian dancer and actress Carmen Miranda, inspired by the 1943 film ‘The Gang’s All Here’ by Busby Berkley. In the film Carmen Miranda wore her famous Tutti Fruity hat, which quickly became her signature outfit and it is pleasingly fitting for a fruit and veg shop.
This is not Shuby’s first encounter in the world of grocery retail; she has previously decorated an East End Fruit Shop.
For those unable to admire Shuby’s joyful retro portrait during their weekly shop, Carmen with Giant Strawberries is still available as a signed giclee, from a limited edition of 50 on hannahmuhle 380g art paper.
